An Autumn Remembered
Bud Wilkinson’s Legendary ’56 Sooners
By Gary T. King; Foreword by Barry Switzer

“If you can remember sitting in Memorial Stadium and watching Tommy McDonald snag passes from Jimmy Harris and Billy Pricer opening big holes for Clendon Thomas to run through and Jerry Tubbs and Bob Harrison smashing ball carriers to the turf, then certainly you will enjoy reliving this memorable season. If you are too young to have seen the team in person, then I know you will definitely enjoy learning about it through the pages of this book. In fact, I do not think one has to be a football fan at all to appreciate An Autumn Remembered. The images and emotions evoked here and the inspiration that can be taken extend far beyond the boundaries of the gridiron.”Barry Switzer

In 1956, a group of young men—sons of the Great Depression—were now student athletes in every sense of the phrase. Their young coach was on the verge of an unprecedented winning streak, and Bud Wilkinson’s ’56 Sooners formed the touchstone of the University of Oklahoma’s football dynasty. This team was the heart and soul of OU’s record 47-straight victories. An Autumn Remembered traces the details of the remarkable ’56 season and follows the team into the present through revealing interviews with the principal players. In this stirring account, Gary T. King brings to life a journey filled with memories, triumph, and glory—an autumn truly to be remembered, and an experience not to be missed.

Gary T. King is Professor of Psychology at Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Barry Switzer, Oklahoma’s head football coach from 1973 to 1988, led the program to three national championships.
