Rose Marie Beebe and Robert Senkewicz discuss their latest book Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo: Life in Spanish, Mexican, and American California. Their deep dive into Vallejo’s writings, archives and related papers illuminate the makeup of the social classes and ethnic groups in California during the nineteenth century, and the tensions and challenges they experienced as they tried to negotiate the political, economic, and social changes that were unfolding.
