William F. Cody Series on the History and Culture of the American West

About the Series

In both popular and scholarly consciousness, the life and times of William F. Cody have come to represent a key phase of the American past. From his early life to his various professional phases, including the decades of the Wild West tours, Cody, and the Buffalo Bill phenomenon more generally, reflect the fundamental currents in American culture. As a case study, Cody’s narrative inspires a particular orientation for scholarship on the American West by foregrounding the relationship between material history and its popular mythologies.
